![]() ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles) are unmanned submersibles designed to perform a wide variety of jobs in place of divers. Sending divers into very deep water involves risks that far outweigh the potential reward. In addition, divers must decompress when ascending or suffer from "the bends," which may take more time than can be spared. The ROV
can quickly decend, perform its job, and suface again, saving time and,
in most cases, money. ROVs may have on-board tools, manipulating arms,
sample-gathering equipment, lights, as well cameras, depending on the
job requirements. Cables for ROVs may have steel strength members (very
common for main lift umbilicals) or kevlar fibers for a lighter, usually
